The Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora has received a $1.8 million grant from the Colorado Health Foundation.
The grant is to support the AHEC's CREATE Health project for two years - a program designed to promote health care in rural Colorado and address the state's shortage of health care professionals.
According to Vincent Atchity, CREATE Health director, shortages across health fields in rural and underserved urban areas of Colorado are very real and are going to become more acute during the next decade as America's baby boomers retire.
"There are jobs for lots of different kinds of people in health care, not just for those who can stomach the sight of blood or years of advanced math and science," said Atchity. "Health care needs compassionate and ethical, people-oriented workers who have the stamina for long hours and plenty of patience."
A CREATE Health Advisory Council has been formed and is meeting for the first time this week.
The CREATE Health project will focus on workforce planning, coordination of health care for the state and establish a health careers website, createhealth.com.
The site will profile health care education programs across the state and make it easier for Coloradans to have health care careers.
Colorado is divided into six regions, each having an Area Health Education Center Office.
